Here is valuable information regarding

your farm here in New York

USDA Census of Agriculture

You may or may not have received a census report to fill out for the USDA Census of Agriculture.  The deadline of February 5, 2008 to complete census reports is fast approaching.  CCE Equine urges you to fill out your Census of Agriculture report so horses get counted.  Horses are historically underreported on the USDA Census of Agriculture.  For instance the number of horses in Saratoga County , New York noted by the 2002 Census of Agriculture is a mere fraction of the numbers reported in the Equine Survey done by USDA/NASS in New York in 2000 and 2005.  Please respond to the Census of Agriculture to help eliminate such disparities.  Filling out your Census of Agriculture will show that horses are alive and well in New York .  The numbers will help those who advocate on behalf of horses to have the numbers to back up their arguments for funding and programs to benefit horses.

To quote the USDA “The Census of Agriculture is the responsibility of every farmer and rancher, regardless of the size or type of operation. For Census purposes, a farm is any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the Census year.”  This is an important distinction from the New York statutes, many of which require income of $10,000 to be considered a farm.
